MLK Day of Service

National Day of Service

January 14, 2012

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was awarded a $15,000.00 signature grant from the HandsOn Network, a Corporation for National & Community Service to support our 2012 MLK, Jr. Day of Service activities. The sorority's signature project was an America's Sunday Supper, which was hosted in Tampa Bay, FL. Chapters across the country and abroad were encouraged to plan and host local suppers and/or service project events.

The goal of the Sunday Suppers and service project events were to:
• Honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.;
• Mobilize volunteers to serve;
• Generate civic dialogue; and
• Inspire continued community service.

On Saturday, January 14, 2012, Beta Omega volunteered with HopeFaith Ministries. Hope Faith Ministries is a non-profit, 501© (3), non-denominational, faith-based ministry that serves the needs of the homeless and less fortunate in Kansas City, MO. On an average day, the facility serves well over 900 people.

We supported Heart to Heart International in this effort. We also had a local Girl Scout Troup, friends and family of Beta Omega members, as well as inactive sisters came out to support the Day of Service. A total of 75 volunteers were present and provided a total of 241.50 hours of volunteer time.

Volunteers served in various components of Hope Faith Ministries. Activities for the day included, serving meals, sorting clothes, distributed clothes in store, assisted in laundry area, assembled medical and educational material give-a-ways, light janitorial work in the dining hall, Ask-A-Nurse, provided baseline medical assessments, assisted in the computer lab, and facilitated games. Beta Omega also donated three car loads of coats to the facility.

FEBRUARY

"Pink Goes Red" for a day

It's been a long tradition for the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to wear the colors pink and green. On National Wear Red Day®, Friday, February 3, 2012, AKA will join millions of Americans in the fight against heart disease in women by wearing RED! Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women, taking the life of one in three women each year. This is especially important for African-American women; who are at increased risk due to factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes. Wear the red dress pin; receive one free when you sign up at GoRedForWomen.org.

MAY

2012 Beta Omega High School Senior Scholarship Reception

Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has been in existence since 1920. Throughout its ninety years of existence, the Beta Omega Chapter has awarded more than one thousand scholarships to high school seniors and college students. In 2008, the Chapter awarded it first ever scholarship to a young man graduating from high school. The Beta Omega Chapter scholarships are now open to both young ladies and men graduating from high school. Through the years, the scholarship amount has varied as has the setting in which the recipients have been recognized. There have been luncheons and receptions held in members homes, hotels and other locations.

Periodically, members of Beta Omega Chapter have established scholarship funds which have been administered by the Chapter. Gracie Guess, an educator, established a scholarship in memory of her daughter, Alvaleta, also a Beta Omega member. Long-time educators, Dorothy Lillard and Corinthian G. Nutter, each bequeathed money to establish scholarships in their names. Ms. Lillard stipulated that a young lady pursuing a degree in music be considered for her scholarship. Ms. Nutter requested that a female high school senior planning to pursue a degree in education be considered for her scholarship.

The scholarship program is part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha legacy of providing financial assistance to young women and men who wish to pursue a post-secondary education. As part of the selection process, the chapter considered academic acheivement, leadership and community awareness.

This year Beta Omega will award scholarships to 6 graduating seniors in the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area.  Each student will receive a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.00 to help defray the cost of their post-secondary education.

NOVEMBER

The 60th Debutante Ball

Friday, November 23, 2012

Sheraton Kansas City at Crown Center

Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated presents the Debutante Ball biennially as a means of encouraging high scholastic achievement among young ladies. The Debutante Ball is an avenue used to introduce deserving and outstanding young ladies as Debutantes to Kansas City society in a formal setting. A Debutante is a young lady who has been prepared in the social graces, trained to dance formally, and who is community service oriented. She is then presented to her community in a formal presentation, which is her first public appearance into society.

The first Debutante Ball was held in 1951 at the American Legion Hall located at Linwood and the Paseo in Kansas City, Missouri. However, the practice of awarding scholarships to the Debutantes wasn't instituted until 1971. Since 1951, Beta Omega and Mu Omega chapters have presented hundreds of young women as Alpha Kappa Alpha Debutantes. The original vision of the Ball has grown into an entire Debutante Ball season of social, cultural, educational and community service activities. At the time of their presentation, all Debutantes are high school seniors or first semester freshmen in college.

As of 2008, Beta Omega and Mu Omega Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. have awarded over $1,197,350.00 in scholarships and book awards. Beta Omega Chapter hosts the Debutante Ball in even numbered years. Since the first Debutante Ball, over 1,800 outstanding young women have been recognized who exhibit high scholastic achievement; are actively involved at their school and community; and are poised and well rounded.

The purpose of the Debutante Ball is to empower and enrich young women with leadership and etiquette training, opportunities for community service, exposing them to cultural arts and facilitating workshops designed to assist them in career choices to become productive members of the African-American community and society. Through this venue, Beta Omega has awarded numerous scholarships and book awards.
